If you are going to use just one essential oil to support physical and psychological health in middle age, it should be lavender.
Lavender has been extensively studied, and its aromatherapy benefits are now well-demonstrated. Personally, I love its soothing, mellow scent, which helps me feel relaxed and grounded, even during a frustrating day at work.
Indeed, researchers have discovered that the stress-fighting effects of lavender are real. At the same time, if you have a hard time concentrating and staying focused, you will find that lavender keeps you more alert even as it relaxes you emotionally.
If by chance you suffer from migraines (I know mine have gotten worse during perimenopause), lavender has one more benefit for you—it can significantly help to reduce migraine pain.
2.) Patchouli
Patchouli is such a gorgeous smell. Its earthy aroma just embraces you, wrapping you up in a comforting blanket of scent. It turns out this isn’t just my association with the scent either. When I did some research, I found out that patchouli can actually boost dopamine levels.
Dopamine plays so many vital roles when it comes to regulating your bodily and mental processes. It is involved with controlling movement, helps you learn and store information, and assists with attention and motivation. It also regulates mood. Too little dopamine can contribute to depression, ADD, Parkinson’s disease, and other health problems.
So wearing patchouli can help you balance your dopamine levels now and as you get older.
No wonder breathing in this scent makes you feel amazing!
3.) Ylang Ylang
Inhaling the heady scent of ylang ylang is a bit like smelling a bouquet of jasmine flowers. Ylang Ylang is a great essential oil for middle aged women to wear for several reasons.
First of all, ylang ylang is wonderfully relaxing. Like lavender, it has a calming effect in the face of stress or depression. Secondly, it can help to regulate heart rate and blood pressure. For this reason, it may be especially helpful if your anxiety tends to result in a fast heartbeat.
Ylang ylang has a further use as well, and that is as an aphrodisiac. This benefit may be especially helpful for those in perimenopause or menopause who are struggling with their libido. Ylang ylang’s intoxicating aroma can do a lot to get you in the mood, and your partner may enjoy it as well.
4.) Rosemary
Do you cook with rosemary? If so, you already are very familiar with its herbaceous scent. But what you might not realize is that just smelling rosemary is enough to help soothe anxiety. It can also make it easier to focus on your work. This makes it one of my favorite scents to wear to the office in my essential oil lava stone jewelry.
5.) Eucalyptus
Do you suffer from problems with your circulation? If so, you will find few essential oils which can have a bigger positive impact on your life than eucalyptus. Eucalyptus oil relaxes your blood vessels. This allows for improvements in blood flow.
If you have ever walked through a eucalyptus grove, you know what a lovely scent this is. So while you are improving your cardiovascular health, you also get to enjoy surrounding yourself with a beautiful aroma.
6.) Sweet OrangeOne of my very favorite scents in the world is that of a fresh-squeezed orange. I wear that scent several times a week in the form of sweet orange essential oil.
Research has shown that sweet orange oil can help to improve mood while combating anxiety in stressful environments. You can imagine how potent this is on its own or mixed in with some of the other uplifting essential oils I have shared above.
7.) Geranium
Another scent that is highly recommended for middle aged women is geranium. The scent is strongly floral and reminiscent of rose.
While the scent itself is lovely, even lovelier is geranium’s ability to counteract anxiety. Wearing geranium essential oil has gotten me through quite a few tense days at work.
Since I started making aromatherapy a regular part of my life, I have been feeling so much less stressed and anxious, and I’ve noticed I am a lot more alert and focused.
I have fewer headaches, and I wake up each morning invigorated and ready for fresh experiences.
While you can apply essential oils topically, I recommend using essential oil lava stone jewelry to make your scents last longer. Essential oils have made a huge difference in my life, and I know they can help you too!
